Metallica sucks! Metallica sold out! Metallica have been killed! ... Ok, I am sure you all have heard it a zillion times, so I'm not going to waste your time with pointless unargumented criticism. Let's just get straight to the business.
We all know that mid-nineties were not exactly the most favorable time for metal. But how many of us realize that in fact there was a moment during that time when the course of history might change drastically? There was a band that possessed it all -- millions of dedicated fans, the exposure and the money. There were powerful record labels, MTV and radiostations that would do anything the band would ask...
Unfortunately for Metal, the band in question lacked just one thing -- courage. It had a perfect opportunity to bring Metal back in full power and be The Trendsetter. Instead, it chose to join the faceless ranks of would-be Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam wannabe's.
Don't ask me to provide an easy explanation to the phenomenon of betrayal. I can't. It hasn't been explained since Cain and Abel. The only thing we can do about it is decide for ourselves whether we want to pay for Judas art or not.
As for selling out... Power to that Metal band that finally "sells out"!
