It had already been an exhausting 2006 in terms of the number of shows I went to. 2006 was tops and certainly showed no signs of slowing down for even a freakin' second. For Raaaaaawwwwktober was upon us and I had a week ahead like no other. What was ahead was five shows in eight days and it went a little something like this:
On Roctober 8th, the evil one came to town, so me and my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna, started our journey on a Sunday night in NYC. I had taken the week off my day job, so this was actually a vacation. I had also taken Monday, Tuesday and Thursday off my night job for the weeknight shows. We arrived at B.B. Kings a little late and missed Decapitated. Krisiun was about to come on. They're some heavy Death from Brazil, so you knew we were in for a pounding. It was a good Death crowd at B.B.'s. Krisiun hadn't been to the states in some time and were greeted loudly and the crowd was charged. They pounded and the pit was swirlin'. They ground out some heavy ass Death, Corpse style, and the crowd was in a frenzy. They were freakin' awesome!! Charging up the crowd for the Evil One. Six Feet Under blasted out with "Shadow Of The Reaper" and the onslaught began. The evil one was in a great mood, interacting enegetically with the raucus crowd. Me and Donna were front and center under Chris' mic, saaaaaaahhwettin' and stompin'!!"Silent Violence" and "Revenge Of The Zombie" blew out the walls! "Feasting On The Blood Of The Insane" drove the crowd in to an insane circle pit. "The Enemy Inside", "Still Alive" and "Victim Of The Paranoid were among the classics. Chris was growling and Steve was crankin'!!! It was nuts. "Suffering in Ecstasy", "The Day The Dead Walked". Faaaaawwk yeah! After their set, a rousing Six-Feet, Six-Feet chant brought them back out with "Human Target" and "War Machine" to destroy the rest of the place. An amazing start to an amazing week.
By the time I regained conciousness the next day, I was already headed back to Donna's house, to pick her up for day two. It was hard to get my head clear of such an awesome show and get ready for another awesome one. It was back under the Hudson again, a little farther downtown for my favorite New York City band, Hanzel Und Gretyl at The Knitting Factory. Amazingly, in my twenty seven years of going to shows, I've never once been to The Knitting Factory. It was also the first time I got on a subway in quite some time, but we ended up getting in early enough to see all the opening bands. Metropolis records hooked me up with guest list and I fell in love with the place immediately. It was tiny. Awesome for pics. Hanzel Und Gretyl are old favorites, especially Vas, the singer/guitar player. She kicks ass bigtime and Kaiser Von loopy is THE man! I was ready for a good ass kickin' saaahhwet!! A local band called Dark Eden got the ball rolling with some NYC goth. Next, was a wicked band from Miami called Wykked Wytch, with some brutal American Black Metal. They had six members and barely fit on the small stage with all their equipment, but they were awesome, nonetheless. Bella Morte from Virginia brought some kick ass, gothic style punk. They were real energetic and rooooocked the place!! Got a good sweat goin'.The place had filled up and the Uber Death Oktotenfest slammed into full gear when Hanzel Und Gretyl hit the stage. The Kaiser was dressed in his full German gear with helmet and Vas was as lovely as ever in her usual black leather mini, red garders and big black boots. I f**kin'love her!! She freakin' rocks! They did all my favorites. "Transplutonian Annihilation", "Disko Fire Sheiss Messiah" "Kaiser Von Shizer". "Third Reich From The Sun" removed the freakin' roof!! It sure was freakin' Uber!! "We Shall Purify","Fikk Dich Mit Fire". Fukken AAAA!!!The new one "Fukken Uber Death Party" blew out the walls and is a sign of good things to come. The Kaiser was riding the crowd and it was an awesome performance. Fukken NYC!!The show got over late and me and Donna missed our last train, so we had time to kill until the morning one, and we decided to go by Avalon, where we would be back in the city tonight for the KMFDM / Combichrist show here. Uh oh! As we approached the old church turned nightclub, we could tell it was pretty vacant and the huge sign on the front door that said "SEIZED BY THE STATE OF NEW YORK" didn't present a very promising outlook for tonights show. Nope. When I got home, I found out the show had been cancelled due to the Avalon getting shut down. Faaaaaaawwwwk!! I had guest list / VIP and was thoroughly pissed!!! So, I had the night off and took time to get some overdue cd reviews done and looked forward to the next show on Thursday. Freakin' Testament!!! Here in Jersey. Yeeeeessss!!
I had to work a night in between here, but Thursday came fast and the Rocktober week continued! I picked up Donna, but we didn't have to rush cause all the warm up bands sucked. One was good, Magus Beast, was some good old school screaming Metal. Testament was a good workout, as usual. They did all old stuff since they had their original line up. They kicked major butt as usual and the crowd was a surfin', stompin' sweatin' safari!! I cracked my face on the guys skull in front of me and got a black eye. Shiiiaaaattt!!! The usual Testament pit. It was awesome. I would've liked to hear some stuff from "The Gathering", but they did all older stuff. Just as well. Kick ass show.
Now it was time to wrap the whole awesome week up with a bloodbath by GWAAAAAAAAARRRR!!!!! Back to the Starland after a few needed days rest. It was another packed house and ,of course, my son made this trip with us. The opening bands sucked, but it's always fun "Gwaaaring" them offstage.
This was my thirteenth time seeing GWAR. Their new album is their best and GWAR is going strong. Time for a soaking. It was nuts, as usual. They did the entire new album with all new characters. Jitler, which was Jesus on one side and Hitler when he turned around. It was siiiickk!!! A huge metallic Lucifer kicked their ass till freakin' GOR-GOR came and chomped his head off. He almost chomped mine off too. I almost got freakin' eaten by GOR-GOR!! It was another amazing bloodbath. George Bush, The Nazi Pope, The pig in the cops uniform, Osama and all the regulars were slaughtered. I was completely covered in muck. It ruled!! They did "Saddam a Go-Go" too which made my night. It was the best out of all the times and an amazing end to an exhausting week. My vacation in Rocktober!! And it didn't end there. I would find myself a week later heading back into NYC for ALICE COOPER and WEDNESDAY 13!!! Ahhhhhhh F**k yeah!!! But that's another story. I'm freakin' beat!!
