With the 'vanishing' of all the Death Metal venues here in Jersey (Krome, Obsessions, Cricket Club) over the last year I figured it was about time to hop a train and head under the river. There wasn't even a March Metal Meltdown this year. MMM VI was a blast last year. What the hell is going on here? But, under the river, there's a blues club doing alot of death lately. B.B.'s. B.B. Kings has been gettin' the attention of the Thundergod. Tiny little place in the heart of one of my favorite places of all time, Times Square. NYC. So I gathered up my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna, and it was "All aboard" NJ Transit and under the Hudson to the city. We're going to see Kreator in NYC for the opening night of "The Enemy of God" tour.
It was a Sunday, so Donna and I were able to get a train and get into the city early. B.B. Kings is on 42nd street, so you can walk there from Penn Station, which is cool, since I always like to get in early so I can walk around Times Square. I've loved Times Square for 25 years. Good, good memories here. Although, it's a bit clean these days, since Rudi. I remember when it was the armpit of the east coast. The good old days, before Rudi ruined it. We had to wait in line for an hour before they opened the damn doors. I was suppoosed to be on the Metal Blade guest list, but something got screwed up, and I was not. Much thanks to Donna for covering my butt with the 23 dollar ticket price, or I never would have gotten in. No props to Metal Blade this time. So, I was starting the night pissed, to say the least. Tiny little place here. Good for pics. Hopefully, all would get better.
THE AUTUMN OFFERING was the first band on, whom I had just seen recently, on the Otep tour and thought were awesome. The stage was small and the bands were very limited in their movement. They're a rowdy, jumpin', stompin, band and the area was tight for that. They were also short a guitarist from the last time I saw them and it seemed to make a difference, as they just didn't pull off as good of a show as the Otep one. They also seemed to be having a disagreement with the NY crowd, or something, which didn't help. It was a good start. PRO-PAIN was coming and I've never seen them NOT blow the roof off, so everything was about to get better. Yeah. I love the Pain. They were a kneck-wrecking frenzy, as usual. "Stand Tall," one of the greatest live songs of all time for me, "Fuck It" kicking my butt! Yeah. PRO-PAIN in NYC. Me and Donna were jumpin' up and down and going nuts, but we seemed to be the only ones. A very mild pit of a couple kids behind us. Man, mellow crowd. I was thinkin' "Charlie don't surf" at B.B.'s. PRO-PAIN was still the shiaatt! though. It was just a 'Death' crowd and Charlie was gettin' on his gear for VADER!.
The crowd began to awaken as it neared VADER time. Their drummer had some problems setting up and I think this cut into their performance time, because they seemed to do a very short set. However, they lit up the Death Metal NYC crowd and got the kids stompin' and yes!!! Surfin'!! I don't think the couple bouncers were prepared for or have ever been to a surfin' safari. Plus , the barrier was right up against the stage, so the surfin' kids were crashing over the barrier right onto the stage. Then, if the bouncers didn't drag them off, they were stage diving. It was friggin' awesome!! VADER'S set was short, but the tide was high when they left, waiting upon KREATOR! The crowd awoke even more when KREATOR walked out and kicked into "Enemy Of God" to open the show. It was amazing. Mille rattled the roof of this tiny place from the get go. This guy can play , man. I was right under his mic. I could reach out and touch his guitar I was so close. He was kickin' some serious butt here! Kids were flyin'!!It was a blast. They just didn't stop for a second. They tore out "Violent Revolution." They ripped "Extreme Aggression," "Endless Pain," a chanting "Flag of Hate" and "All of the Same Blood(Unity)." "Phobia," "Pleasure to Kill," they were bringin' it!! It was a crowd surfin', stage divin', screamin', stompin' dripping sweat set!!! A long hour and a half set. They were tight and didn't miss a beat. KREATOR blew us away to open their tour. It was the best show of the year, so far and Tgod will certainly be going under the river for his live Death Metal fix, to the home of the blues and new home of the Death! Yeah! Mille is the man!! And....B.B.King too.
