BLOOD SUNDAE INTERVIEW | Harm.us - Death, Black, Doom and Gothic Metal WebZine, bandlist, cd reviews, interviews, mp3 and forum

BLOOD SUNDAE IS A FIVE PIECE, ALL GIRL, GOTHIC/MELODIC METAL BAND OUT OF LEEDS, ENGLAND.

Hey this is Anna from Blood Sundae. I've answered ya questions and got the others to add some bits to it, yey!!

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HOMETOWN AND WHAT THINGS WERE LIKE GROWING UP THERE.

Anna: Leeds has a really good alternative music scene so even as a kid I was always going to gigs. And I was like performing live at about 13 years old which alot of kids find it hard to do. So that side of it was good. In school though I always got shit for being into rock music, I was never really accepted for who I was :’(

Emily: I've lived in Leeds all my life and it is now the fastest growing city in England so there are lots of things going on now although not as much growing up. It was rather quiet then.

WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU WANTED TO PLAY AND WRITE MUSIC?

Vanessa: I've always been into music from a young age and built up a large tape collection as a youngster. I started playing the saxophone when I was about 13 and taught myself guitar when I was about 16. I quit the saxophone because I decided it didn’t fit in with my image and kept playing guitar instead! My favourite band ever is Metallica and decided I wanted to be just like them when I grow up...rich!

Anna: I was eleven when I first started playing drums. Before Blood Sundae playing and writing music was just a hobby, something to do with my mates. It was only when I joined Blood Sundae that I realised I was actually really serious about it and wanted to get somewhere.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU DEVELOPE YOUR MUSICAL SKILLS?

Vanessa: I used my music theory that I learned with the sax to teach myself guitar and basically learned how to play Metallica songs.

WHAT CD'S MIGHT WE HAVE FOUND IN YOUR PLAYER SAY....TEN YEARS AGO?

Anna: Hmmm? I was 9/10, I was listening to Blur, Nirvana and The Offspring, all the commercial rock bands really.

Vanessa: Metallica, Nirvana, RHCP, Pantera etc

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU ALL COME TOGETHER TO FORM THE BAND 'BLOOD SUNDAE'?

Anna: I think Emily and Charlotte found each other and the rest of us from the internet through various adverisments.

Em: As a 4 (as we were initially) between January and March 2004. Vanessa joined as a second guitarist in December later that year.

TELL ME HOW A 'BLOOD SUNDAE' SONG COMES TOGETHER; THE WRITING, THE MUSIC ETC.

Anna: A typical Blood Sundae song would start off as a riff from Leanne or Emily then we just really jam it out until we're all happy with it and we've all added our own little vibe :)

Em: Through various methods; sometimes one will come up with a whole song and teach the others or one will come up with a riff and then we'll collectively build upon it.

WHAT CD'S CAN WE FIND YOU LISTENING TO MOST TODAY?

Anna: This week I have been mostly listening to Trivium, Heaven Shall Burn, All Shall Perish. I'm a little metalcore freak but I love my hip hop and ambient stuff as well!!

Em: Rammstein, Caliban, God Forbid, Tori Amos, Killswitch Engage, Ill Disposed, Deadsoil, Breed77... just to name a few of course.

Vanessa: Hardcore, Converge, Will Haven, Walls of Jericho, Hope Conspiracy etc

YOU RECORDED THE TRACKS FOR YOUR DEBUT CD AS PART OF THE DARK ANGEL PROJECT IN SOUTH AFRICA. TELL ME ABOUT THE PROJECT AND HOW YOU WERE SELECTED.

Em: I found the Dark Angel project while surfing the net for new contacts. The deal was that the chosen band would be flown out to the Dark Angel studios to record, play live and be given an education in the workings of the music industry. At this time of course we had no idea where it was or if we would even be successful.

WHO IS DARK ANGEL?

Dark Angel or Ankha as we call her; is a top platinum selling producer and musician from South Africa and you'll be hearing more about her in the media in time to come.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR 19 DAY EXPERIENCE WITH HER IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Em: It was a great learning curve, giving us the chance to record in a professional studio and perform on an international scale. It was fun too.

Anna: I thought it was completely mental, I loved every second even though we worked our butts off. We all learned so much as well and met some ace people.

DESCRIBE THE UPCOMING CD; MUSICALLY, LYRICALLY ETC.

Em: The CD is of the melodic metal genre and is filled with deep lyrics, chunky riffs as well as clean and distorted vocals.

TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF YOUR LIVE GIGS AND CROWD REACTIONS.

Anna: I love the look on guys faces when we get on stage and they're like 'yeh this is gonna be shit' but their jaws drop hahaa!! We always get a good response from the crowd though. Touch wood.

Em: People seem to be quite taken aback as they dont expect women to be able to play the way we do. But they leave happy ;-)

HAVE YOU SIGNED TO A LABEL YET?

Anna: No, not yet but that is part of what Dark Angel wants to do for us. Hopefully after all the promo and hard work that's been going on and the cd and videos are out someone will consider it.

Em: Not just yet but hopefully that will happen at some point soon.

WHEN MIGHT WE EXPECT THE CD TO BE FINISHED AND RELEASED?

Em: The CD is due to be released mid February 2006 and in the meantime we plan to engage in further rehearsal in preparation for tours to coicide with that.

DO YOU THINK THAT YOU MIGHT GET OVER HERE TO THE STATES AFTER IT'S RELEASE?

Anna: We'd love to come over to the States. It's a dream for us. We want to play absolutely everywhere, we just need the chance to do it!!

Em: That's the plan, after all Dark Angel has just signed another band who happens to be from the states, "Diabolic Intent', so there also may be some shows on the card with them.

IF YOU DO, CAN TGOD BE YOUR PERSONAL BODYGUARD ON THE EAST COAST?

Anna: Yeah baby!!! Anyone that would brave a Napalm Death pit is worthy :) I went to see them play this summer and it was completely mental Yeah!! \m/ Thank you, Anna :)

Thanks girls! Tgod looks forward to the release of your debut, as well as showing ya around NYC when you come over! http://www.bloodsundae.co.uk/
