The dark and stark artwork of the cover warns you of a hateful/ blasphemous Black Metal album, but it is rather far from reality. As a matter of fact, Elffor was created with the purpose of composing ambient and Medieval Black metal. Four albums were done between 1998 and 2005. A deal was done with German underground label Northern Silence to re-release them. After successfully re-releasing Into the Dark Forest last year, it is now time for Son of Shades after going through re-recording and re-mastering. Similar to Summoning, Elffor is as epic as one could expect. Mostly electronics, with plenty of symphonic and medieval keyboard work, drum machines (sounding great & epic mind you). Eöl got some help from guitar player Jabo (Numen), for added distortion in the riffing as well as some acoustic guitar and arpeggios. A bit of samplings in the shape of wind, thunder, wolves and bells, all of which coming in handy in the atmospheric department. Most of this music is instrumental, while raspy vocals and/or clean voices often taking a narrative edge, tell the somber story of Son of the Shade. 8/10 |
